Capulin Volcano National Monument

Our road trip in 2017 was awesome! We saw so many sights along the way and loved each one!

Our first National Monument/Park on our road trip adventure was Capulin Volcano National Monument. We spent about 2 hours in this park as we needed to make sure we got to Great Sand Dunes at the right time. However, this park was pretty awesome!

Since Capulin is a National Monument and not a park, the main focal point is the volcano itself. We were trilled to find out we could drive pretty far up the side, especially since this was our first hike on the trip, and our first hike above sea-level in quite awhile.

Once we drove up the volcano, there was plenty of parking and bathrooms at the trailhead. This trail circled the opening of the volcano and was so beautiful.

Since we were still in the desert, we could see for miles once we reached the top. We saw plenty of desert plants and enjoyed a fairly leisurely walk around the top.

While walking around we were able to sit and enjoy the view on benches and could read more about the area with the informational panels provided for visitors.

How incredible is this view?! Capulin is a bit out of the way, but if you are ever in the area be sure to stop by and check out such a unique sight.

Much love,

Chelsea
