Running Update

I have been running Since mid-February, so I figured it was time for a update!

If you read my post from my 26th birthday, you know that I have recently taken up the new hobby of running. Since it has been a couple of months now, I wanted to give an update into what that looks like realistically.

My Running Background

Let me start off by saying, “What running background?!” because I have never run in my life. I have sprinted, I have jogged for tiny distances, and I have walked fast, but I have never ever run for any significant time or distance in my entire life. What about PE you ask? Oh, well I would just get out of it the high school movie way with cramps or headaches or stomach aches, etc. So when I say that I have never really run before, it is a hardcore, true statement.

My Running Goals

In the last couple of years, I have noticed how I am no longer an 18 year old (shocker!) and that physical activity makes me feel better and look my best. I wanted to try doing an exercise that I could do without a gym but could still have goals to meet and training to challenge me. My friend talked me into signing up for a race back in January to run in June. I was really hesitant, but after a few days Zach and I decided to sign up together for the lowest level available: the 5k. I figured if I started early enough, I could at the very least run the whole thing and try to be competitive with my time.

My New Running Goals

Since I have started training, I have had some hiccups along the way. I hurt my ankle last month at work and then was having abdominal issues after that, so I was unable to train for about 3-3.5 weeks out of the month. This really set me back in training and it was hard not to be discouraged. This past week I ran as far as I could without stopping, and that ended up being only about a half of a mile. While this seems short and insignificant, I was so happy. I have never run that far before, and I am so excited to see how this grows. Since that last check in, I now realize even my simple goals might be a bit out of range for me as a beginner. My goal now is to run as much as I can, and to finish the race strong. I hope that I can run the whole 5k, I hope I don’t come in last, and I hope that I can run more competitively. However, I think my life is just full of “I did it”‘s right now. I am glad to be able to move enough to do something and complete it. Sometimes that is all we have, and right now that is what is encouraging me.

Who knows? Maybe I will run the 10k next year? 🙂

Much love,

Chelsea
