Music Jar 2021

In order to broaden my music tastes, I tried listening to a new artist each week of 2021.

I actually tried this in 2020, and promptly forgot about it the 4th week of the year. I was inspired by my friend Ryan, who listened to every album on the Rolling Stones Top 500 Albums of All Time in a year. I really wanted to listen to new music, but instead took the same list, and went by artist. I selected the top 52 artists off the list, wrote them on a piece of paper, cut them up, and put them in a jar. Each Sunday I choose a new artist randomly out of the jar and listen to their discography on Spotify throughout the week. In order to keep up with my favorites, I created a Spotify playlist to help me track my favorite songs from the year. (The Spotify playlist includes the artists I listened to in 2020 as well)

2021 Music Jar Artists By Week

  1. Sly and the Family Stone 2/5
  2. Simon & Garfunkle 5/5
  3. Muddy Waters 2/5
  4. Nirvana 1/5
  5. Neil Young 4/5
  6. Neil Young (second half of discography) 4/5
  7. Patti Smith 0/5
  8. Van Morrison 3/5
  9. Van Morrison (second half of discography) 3/5
  10. Carol King (Fave album: Tapestry)
  11. Carol King 5/5
  12. Fleetwood Mac – blue albums 2/5
  13. Fleetwood Mac – Stevie Nix era onward. 5/5 (for about 8 weeks haha!)
  14. Pink Floyd 0/5
  15. Avril Lavigne

While I didnt make it the whole year with each week, I really enjoyed this process! I spent some extra time on some artists and enjoyed slowing it down to really enjoy different artists. I am going to continue into 2022, and cant wait to see what else is out there!

Much love,

Chelsea
